SUMMARY:Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell
DESCRIPTION:On May 5th the UUCB Choir\, staff\, and guest musicians from around the country will present Henry Purcell’s baroque opera Dido and Aeneas for our first ever MUUsic Weekend. \nDido and Aeneas tells the story of Dido\, Queen of Carthage\, as first told in Virgil’s epic The Aeneid. The widowed and exiled queen is master of her own domain until the widowed and exiled hero Aeneas arrives on her queendom’s shores. Through the meddling of the gods\, the two rulers’ fates are bound together\, only to then be forced violently apart with horrific consequences for Dido. The opera is known for its tragic ending\, but this mythic tale is also full of humor and insight into what it means to be human. Its hour-long duration is crammed full of stunning singing from both the soloists and Greek-style chorus. Our production will also feature period string and keyboard instruments as would have been used in the opera’s original productions in the 1680s. \n\n\n7:00 – 7:20 PM – Pre-Show Talk\n7:30 – 8:30 PM – Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas\n8:30 – 9:30 PM – Reception \n\n\nFOR TICKETS: https://www.eventbrite.com/…/muusic-weekend-2023-henry… \nPAY VIA CHURCH PAYPAL (write “Music Weekends” in the NOTES section): https://buffalouu.org/donate \nSUGGESTED DONATION: $25.00

SUMMARY:Casual Concert Series: Bruce Pfeffer and Martha Malkiewicz\, Piano Four Hands Recital.
DESCRIPTION:Martha and Bruce’s repertoire includes masterworks by “The Immortals\,” as well as rarities by lesser-known composers that deserve a hearing. For this recital they will feature compositions by Mozart\, Schubert\, and Debussy\, as well as what may be the earliest example of an original work for two players at one keyboard. \nMartha and Bruce began their four-hand piano collaboration in 2017\, inspired by a mutual interest in hosting musical “house parties” in the spirit of the 19th-century Schubertiades. They have followed up on an annual basis with cultural soirees that also showcased the work of visual artists and photographers to augment the musical programs. \nAbout the Artists \n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Royall Consort
DESCRIPTION:The Royall Consort was formed twenty years ago by Roland Hayes\, David Abbott and Nancy Nuzzo to play 17th century English chamber music of William Lawes\, John Jenkins\, Matthew Locke and other composers. We have had different personnel over the years\, and we have also played French baroque chamber music.  The Royall Consort is the name given to ten Setts of dances by William Lawes\, a brilliant young composer who was killed in the English Civil War. \nFor Saturday February 18th we will play French baroque chamber music of Marin Marais (1656 – 1728) and Jaques Bodin de Boismortier (1689 – 1755) as well as two suites by Englishman William Williams (1675 – 1701). \nMarin Marais was a fixture in the court of Louis 14th (1638 – 1715) and his trios (1692) strongly reflect the late 17th century style of Versailles and Lully. William Williams composed in a somewhat later style with more Italian influences. Jaques Bodin de Boismortier was one of the first composers to enrich himself through the publication and sale of his very popular chamber pieces.  Forty years after the Marais trios\, Boismortier’s trios (1732) are lighter and quicker in style\, reflecting the more popular side of the high baroque period.

SUMMARY:UUCB Music Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Musical Sunday! – our new tradition of a musically rich service that is the smaller production in comparison to our Spring “Music Sunday\,” as the Music Ministry juggles both this event and preparation for the holidays. Never fear\, though\, for this service – entitled “Singing as Spiritual Practice” will be a very special experience. Our Music Director Jessie Downs will be sharing readings\, a story\, and a sermon about the spiritual power of vocal practice\, and the two featured choral numbers will help illustrate these ideas. The first of the two pieces – “Talismane-Charm” – was written by Jessie about 10 years ago and has been revised specially for this group and this event. It is partnered with the piece that inspired it – “Talismane” by Robert Schumann. The Prelude and Postlude are a similar pairing – excerpts from “Variations” by Downs\, modeled after the “Geister Variations (Ghost Variations)” by Schumann. At the Offertory\, our special guest instrumentalists – Megan Kyle (oboe) and David Abbott (viola da gamba) – will join Chris Sierzchula (harpsichord) in a piece by G.P. Telemann. With three different keyboard instruments and a double choir featuring 7 special guest vocalists\, this is not an event to be missed! \n

SUMMARY:Casual Concert Series: Alex Huddleston: Guitar and Electronics
DESCRIPTION:Alex Huddleston is a composer of chamber and electronic music\, and a visual artist producing digital and algorithmic art. His music seeks to occupy a liminal space in which serendipitous relationships emerge and collapse in a play of familiarity and otherness. Centered on themes of alienation\, sorrow\, anxiety\, schizophrenia\, and fear\, his work embodies a singular affect – there is too much and too little\, it is too fast and too slow\, it is elegant and awkward\, it makes too much sense and makes no sense. Contradictions accumulate; all have the form of two yeses pointing outwards\, rather than two nos pointing in. \nWebsite: alexhuddleston.com\nFind him on YouTube!
