L’enfant prodigue (The Prodigal Son)

On Friday, July 25th at 7pm, at Calvary Episcopal Church in Williamsville, Sotto Voce and visiting Korean ensemble Studio frische Klänge are joined by members of the UB Department of Theater and Dance and Avanti! Chamber orchestra to present “Grit & Silk: the voices of the Gayageum and Debussy.” You won’t want to miss UUCB’s Beth White in the lead role of the mother in Debussy’s 30-minute opera L’enfant prodigue (The Prodigal Son). This re-telling of the well-known parable will be sung in French with English subtitles, accompanied by a chamber orchestra and dancers. The half-hour opera will also be preceded by a unique prelude of gayageum music and Debussy art songs. This event is music- and stage-directed by UUCB’s Jessie Downs, who is excited to be making her stage directing debut with this special concert.
Suor Angelica
Sotto Voce’s Summer 2024 production was Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica. The shows were presented at St. Joseph University Parish, at 3269 Main St. in Buffalo on Friday, June 28th and Sunday, June 30th.

Suor Angelica tells the tragic story of a woman who is forced into a convent after having a child out of wedlock. This is a story that unveils the gruesome truth of how society throughout the ages attempts to erase those it sees as unnecessary persons. To illustrate the timelessness of this tale, Sotto Voce was inspired to stage the work alongside interview clips from survivors of the Troubled Teen Industry. Despite the opera’s dark themes, its miraculous ending also demonstrates the power of faith in redemptive love that can transcend humanity’s punitive institutions.
