Sotto Voce has been housed by the UU Church of Buffalo since their inception in 2016. Sotto Voce’s musical offerings serve as a part of UUCB’s extended ministry to the Buffalo community through music and educational programming.

Suor Angelica

Sotto Voce’s Summer 2024 production will be Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica. While UUCB is happy to host musical rehearsals for this production, the shows themselves will be presented at St. Joseph University Parish, at 3269 Main St. in Buffalo on Friday June 28th at 7pm and Sunday June 30th at 3pm.

Suor Angelica tells the tragic story of a woman who is forced into a convent after having a child out of wedlock. This is a story that unveils the gruesome truth of how society throughout the ages attempts to erase those it sees as unnecessary persons. To illustrate the timelessness of this tale, Sotto Voce was inspired to stage the work alongside interview clips from survivors of the Troubled Teen Industry. Despite the opera’s dark themes, its miraculous ending also demonstrates the power of faith in redemptive love that can transcend humanity’s punitive institutions.

St. Joseph will provide a beautiful performance space that will help to capture this opera’s particular setting, while also expanding the reach of the extended UUCB Music Ministry into the broader Buffalo community. Sotto Voce will be back at UUCB for their Fall 2024 Gala. There will also be one or more special satellite events for Suor Angelica at UUCB – where you can learn more about the struggle to shut down the Troubled Teen Industry, as well as hear previews of Puccini’s beautiful music. Stay tuned!
