The UU Church of Buffalo is looking for a Tenor Soloist/ Section Leader. The Soloist is expected to be a strong music learner who can set a good example for their section as well as versatile musician who can perform in small ensemble and solo contexts in a variety of styles. The Soloist should have a strong voice that exhibits a grasp on the fundamentals of classical technique while also being able to sing in more popular styles. Soloists are expected to come to rehearsals with their music prepared, ready to work on the collaborative aspects of music making. Soloists are also expected to advocate for the volunteer members of their section and lead by example. The Tenor Soloist must be able to work cooperatively with the other Soloists, Accompanist, and Director. Good communication skills, reliability, and openness to feedback are a must. Candidates with a degree in Vocal Performance or equivalent experience/ private training in vocal performance will be given preference.
Vocal Soloists attend weekly rehearsals Thursdays 7:30-9:45pm, as well as Sunday morning services 9:30-11:30am. They are also required to attend monthly planning meetings every penultimate Thursday of the month 6-7pm, and semi-frequent small ensemble rehearsals – usually scheduled during the hour before full choir rehearsals. The Soloist must log a total of 6 hours a week, which may include home practice. Time off may be granted by the Director with sufficient advanced notice, and missed hours must be made up. Special events throughout the year provide opportunities for extra hours and additional pay. Soloists are also not contracted from late June to mid-August but may sing at the church during the summers for extra pay.
